Wolfgang Achtner

Wolfgang Achtner (born September 2, 1957 in Weyer , Oberlahnkreis ; † October 31, 2017 in Gießen ) was a German Protestant theologian . He was a key figure in the dialogue between science and religion in Germany.

Life

During his studies in Protestant theology at the universities of Mainz , Göttingen and Heidelberg, Achtner dealt with the areas of systematic theology and the Old Testament . His dissertation focused on the dialogue between science and religion in the work of Scottish theologian Thomas F. Torrance . After completing his doctorate, he received a research grant for one year at Heidelberg University . During this time he translated his work Dimensions of Time ... into the English language.

During his time as pastor of a parish in Mainz , Achtner earned a master's degree in mathematics . During a sabbatical in 1999/2000 he was at the Princeton Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Princeton (New Jersey) . Since 2000, Achtner has been pastor of the Protestant student community at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen as well as a private lecturer . At the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , he was also a private lecturer in systematic theology in the Protestant theology department . On February 1, 2013 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Giessen .

Achtner won a scholarship for The John Templeton Seminars on Science and Christianity . He was a member of the Evangelical Academy Arnoldshain in Arnoldshain im Taunus .

At the age of 60, Wolfgang Achtner died on October 31, 2017 of the consequences of a heart attack .
