Arnoldshain is a district of the Schmitten community in the Hochtaunus district in southern Hesse .
geography
Despite its height of 468 to 672 meters above sea level , there is a favorable climate due to the valley location and leeward location, which is even referred to as a healing climate .
Arnoldshain has two smaller residential areas, the Hegewiese and the Galgenfeld. Both are former weekend areas, but now residential areas in the middle of the forest. Arnoldshain has a total of 1917 inhabitants.
history
Politically, Arnoldshain initially belonged to the rule of Hattstein , later came partly under Reifenberger (Bassenheimer) rule .
In the course of administrative reform in Hesse , the previously independent community Arnoldshain was powerful state law with other, previously independent municipalities, to today's on August 1, 1972 Great community Schmitten together . Arnoldshain has been part of the Schmitten community since then .
politics
mayor
The last mayor of the independent municipality was Hans Kinkel.
coat of arms
Blazon : "A black pole in silver, topped with a red scale and a lowered silver sword."
The coat of arms adopted by the municipality on November 8, 1952 is designed according to the seals used since 1816. These bring a personal representation of Justitia with scales in her right hand and a sword in her left. The coloring refers to the old rulers: the lords of Reifenberg and von Hattstein, under whose common sovereignty the place stood, and the Counts of Bassenheim, to whom it then passed in 1686. After his attack at Nassau (1806), he has kept a COURT SEAL TO ARNOLDSHAIN since 1816, which contains the Nassau lion shield.
Culture and sights
Buildings
For the listed buildings see the list of cultural monuments in Arnoldshain .
The old town hall in the center of the town was built around 1800 as a town hall and community bakery . The school was also housed here until 1822. In the late 19th century a syringe house was added and cattle scales were added in 1914 . In 1972, with the merger to form the community of Schmitten, its use as town hall ends. Today the building is used by the history association, as a local museum and as a community archive.
In the course of the village renovation, the village fountain opposite the old town hall was renewed in 2008 and a stainless steel sculpture was erected showing a blacksmith and thus reminding of the tradition of iron processing in the Taunus villages.
The Sandplacken area of Arnoldshain is also located at the top of the pass on Kanonenstraße, one of the traffic arteries from the Hintertaunus to the Rhine-Main area . Since the Sandplacken is used by many hikers as a starting point for hikes through the Taunus , especially on weekends , there is a restaurant and a hotel here.
There is also a Friends of Nature House in the Hegewiese district.

Laurentiuskirche
The Laurentius Church in Arnoldshain was first mentioned in 1215 in the "Rotulus omnium iurium" (List of All Rights). However, it is much older, the foundation walls are dated to the year 1100. The church was the main church of the Knights of Hattstein , who had their headquarters in the neighboring Hattstein Castle . Initially, the church belonged to Schloßborn under canon law . Around 1300 there was a separate parish in Arnoldshain. The first pastor, whose name has been recorded, was named in 1492. In 1488 the Marienglocke was cast. After the roof structure collapsed, extensive renovation was carried out from 1761 to 1764. In 1783 the first organ was installed. This was previously in use in the Idstein city church. Further renovations took place in 1901 and in the 1950s. Despite some extensions to the formerly octagonal chapel, the old part has been preserved to this day. The Laurentiuskirche is one of the oldest buildings still in use in the Hochtaunus.
The three-part Gothic glass window behind the organ from around 1470 shows the Reifenberg coat of arms on the left, St. George with the dragon in the middle and a falconer on the right. The artist is said to have been the caretaker, a Middle Rhine painter, draftsman and engraver of the late 15th century or one of his schools. The Arnoldshain painter Hans Adam designed additional glass windows in 1960. The altar made of Villmar marble and the pulpit are dated to the first half of the 19th century. The artistically forged churchyard gate was manufactured in Frankfurt in 1760.
Local dialect
The language of the Arnoldshain and the other Hochtaunusdörfer is very similar, but there are exceptions. The cause of this phenomenon is likely to be the influence of the Westerwald or Wetterau dialect in the villages downstream, while the Lower Main idiom has shaped the language in the upper villages through various connections since ancient times.
Infrastructure
There is a kindergarten and a village community center in the village .
Evangelical Academy
The Evangelical Academy based in Arnoldshain with its conference center " Martin Niemöller -Haus" achieved fame in 1957 through the establishment of the eight Arnoldshain Last Supper theses. An attempt was made to create the conditions for communion between the Lutheran , Uniate and Reformed member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (see: Arnoldshainer Conference ). In 2012 the academy was merged with the Evangelical City Academy Römer 9 to form the Evangelical Academy Frankfurt .
education
School lessons in Arnoldshain were initially carried out separately according to denomination in rented rooms. In 1750 a house was acquired for the first time to teach Protestant children. The first teacher at this school was the stocking weaver Johann Friedrich Reeck, who was later followed by his brother. From 1773 Christian Reuter from Rod am Berg was a teacher. His successor Ludwig Alberti was the first teacher to attend a teachers' seminar. In 1817 the simultaneous school was introduced in the Duchy of Nassau . In 1821/1822 a new schoolhouse was built in the Stichelwiese, in which the children of both denominations were taught. 80 pupils and 44 pupils were taught in four grade levels.
Since the 1950s, the schools in Schmitten and Arnoldshain have been merged into a single elementary school . In 1960 the new school building was erected at the current location. With the school reform of 1967 this elementary school became a four-class elementary school . The regional reform in Hesse led to Arnoldshain and Schmitten becoming part of the new large community of Schmitten. The old school building on the Stichelwiese has now been demolished.
The primary school "Jürgen Schumann School" was named after the pilot Jürgen Schumann , who was murdered on October 16, 1977 when the plane "Landshut" was hijacked by a Palestinian terrorist squad in Aden . A series of extensions and new buildings expanded the school building in the following decades.
