Fred Schepisi
Fred Schepisi (* 26. December 1939 in Richmond , Australia as Frederic Alan Schepisi ) is an Australian director , screenwriter and producer .
The son of a greengrocer was a hard worker from a young age, so at the age of 25 he and two friends bought the company Cine Sound Melbourne , which he then renamed Film House .
As a commercial filmmaker, Schepisi gained practical experience with the medium, and he was also becoming more and more famous. After a few film experiments, he made his first feature-length film in 1976, entitled Playground of the Devil . Schepisi herself was in a convent school. If one knows the life story of Schepisi, it becomes immediately clear that the story set in a Catholic convent school is based on one's own experiences. The problems between the strict rules of the order and the beginning of puberty are treated as critical as they are non-polemical.
Social criticism has become Schepisi's subject, including two years later in Jimmie Blacksmith's film The Ballad . Here he reflects on the extermination of the Australian aborigines, parallel to that of the Indians in North America. Although the film is in favor of the critics, it will be a financial flop. Annoyed by the lack of attention from his compatriots, he goes to the USA. Schepisi is finding it difficult to gain a foothold in the USA - his first works are weak. But in 1987 he made a commercial breakthrough with the Cyrano de Bergerac parody Roxanne . The film The Russia House , shot in 1990 , was also well received by audiences and critics. Schepisi's last works were characterized by their satirical wit.
