Retired lawyer Mitchell Gromberg fears death. His son Alex Gromberg receives advice from him from time to time, but tries to follow a different path in life than his father. His grandson Asher Gromberg studies without much ambition and takes drugs. Asher's younger brother, Eli, wrote to ask for more pocket money.

Alex flirts with Suzie, who volunteers with him in a kitchen for the poor. He resists her to avoid feeling guilty. Asher is involved in drug deals and arrested. Since the police raid his home without a valid order, the family expects an acquittal.

Mitchell's wife dies, later his brother dies. Mitchell and Alex host the former sailor's cremation on a burning boat.

The grandfather-grandmother-father-son relationship between Mitchel, Evelyn, Alex and Asher Gromberg also exists in reality with these impersonating actors Kirk, Michael and Cameron Douglas and Diana Dill. Michael's younger brother Joel Douglas was also involved in the film, but was only an associate producer.
