Paul Grabowsky (born September 27, 1958 in Lae , Papua New Guinea ) is an Australian jazz musician ( piano , arrangements and composition ).

Life

Grabowsky took piano lessons from the age of five and studied at the Melbourne Conservatory . In 1978 he received his first composition commission from the Australia Council Music Board. In 1981, after appearing on the radio in his home country, he came to Germany on a scholarship. Here he became known with the quartet of Günther Klatt , founded a trio with Rocky Knauer and Sunk Pöschl . He has also appeared with Chet Baker , Roman Schwaller , Leszek Zadlo , Benny Bailey , Johannes Faber , Sal Nistico and Johnny Griffin . Lala Kovacev(“Balkan Impressions”), Remo Rau , the groups Just Friends (“Don't Look Back”) and The Conference brought him in for recordings. He performed at festivals with his own trio and made his own recordings. In 1985 he returned to Melbourne. In Australia he works with his own band, which has accompanied guest soloists such as Dewey Redman , Sheila Jordan , Steve Lacy and Cindy Blackman . Furthermore, he regularly tours the USA and Europe and also works as a guest in other groups, for example with Marty Cook .

He has recorded several albums with his group and thus in 2003 the album Tales of Time and Space with Branford Marsalis , Joe Lovano , Scott Tinkler , Ed Schuller and Jeff Tain Watts as well as the trio album Big Adventure with Philip Rex and Niko Schäuble , the more albums followed. He also played film music, including for " It Runs In the Family ". He also directed the house band of an Australian television show and the Australian Art Orchestra he founded . On the album Nylipidgi (2016) he integrated elements of jazz into the music and myths of the Australian Aborigines .
