Lala Kovačev
Branislav "Lala" Kovačev ( kyr. Бранислав "Лала" Ковачев ; born November 19, 1939 in Kikinda , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † September 4, 2012 in Hvar , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav - Serbian drummer and percussionist of modern jazz .
Life
Kovačev first played the trumpet before switching to drums and - influenced by Willis Conover's Jazz Hour - turned to jazz. At seventeen he became a member of the Radio Belgrade Jazz Orchestra , which was then directed by Vojislav Simic. In the mid-1960s he moved to Germany, where he joined Horst Jankowski's orchestra , with whom he toured internationally. In 1974 he moved to Max Greger , a year later to the NDR Rundfunk Orchester in Hanover. In addition, since the 1970s he led his own groups such as the European Jazz Consensus (with Gerd Dudek , Alan Skidmore and Adelhard Roidinger ), which was committed to avant-garde jazz ; he played fusion albums with Wolfgang Dauner and Michal Urbaniak and performed especially in what was then Yugoslavia with Dusko Goykovich . In the Trixi recording studio in Munich he took part in three productions by the composer Mladen Gutesha, always with the same rhythm group: Sigi Schwab , Eberhard Weber and Lala Kovacev worked with Chris Hinze , Benny Bailey and Charlie Mariano / Ack van Rooyen .
With his own groups, he developed an ethno-jazz that was based on the complex Balkan rhythms . He also played with musicians such as Art Van Damme , Chuck Israels , Ack and Jerry van Rooyen , Hans Koller , Albert Mangelsdorff , Stephan Diez , David Gazarov and Tony Scott , in whose albums he was partly involved.
