Jo Mikovich

Jo Mikovich (born December 26, 1940 in Zaječar as Jovan Miković ; † February 21, 2014 ) was a Serbian jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , soprano saxophone , piano , violin , clarinet , arrangement , composition ) of Yugoslav origin.

Live and act

Jo Mikovich grew up in a family of musicians and learned to play the violin and clarinet from his father, a violinist who led his own orchestra. At the age of 17 he already studied clarinet and violin at the Belgrade Conservatory before switching to the saxophone as the main instrument. He preferred to play the Selmer Mark 6 saxophones and was a multi-instrumentalist. At the age of 23 he first moved to Frankfurt, from where he worked as a professional musician. During this time he played in American clubs all over Europe and was also a member of the official Belgrade Show Ensemble.

After attending the Newport Jazz Festival , he was with Jimmy Smith's band for a year and also played with jazz giants such as Charles Mingus , Cannonball Adderley and Chick Corea . In the 1970s he was the musical director and arranger of the Montenegro Singers (album Montenegro Singers 1977). In 1977 he was also one of the Yugoslav Jazz All Stars ( 4 Lica jazza ) with u. a. Dusko Goykovich , with whom he appeared frequently, most recently on the occasion of his 70th birthday, together with Charly Antolini . At the beginning of the 1980s he belonged to the Lala Kovacev Group with which he released the groundbreaking jazz / Balkan / fusion record Balkan Impressions in 1982. .

Since the mid-1980s he was based in Ulm, where he worked temporarily as a theater musician and released several albums under his own name. He continued to play at important jazz festivals around the world with well-known greats in the industry.

In 2003 his own composition Romantic Expectation was part of the soundtrack of the Hollywood blockbuster Down with Love with Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor .

He died of cancer at the age of 73.
