János Egri

János Egri (born February 7, 1966 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian modern jazz musician ( double bass , also bass guitar ).

Live and act

Egri first took classical violin lessons before switching to bass when he was 14. He took lessons from Gyula Sellei, the principal of bassists in the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since the age of 18 he played jazz . He worked with musicians such as Tony Lakatos , Ferenc Snétberger , Mihály Dresch and Béla Szakcsi Lakatos .

In 1990 he formed the Trio Midnight with pianist Kálmán Oláh and drummer Elemér Balázs , which won first prize at an international jazz competition in Belgium in 1995 after performing in France and Italy. In 1996 he founded his János Egri Group . He also played with Frank Zappa , James Moody , Tony Scott , Steve Grossman , Pat Metheny , Lee Konitz , Hal Galper and Jack DeJohnette . He can also be heard on albums by Jo Mikovich and Steve Houben .

In 2001 he received the Artisius Prize.
