Ferenc Snétberger

Ferenc Snétberger (* 6. February 1957 in Salgótarján ) is a Hungarian jazz - guitarist .

Life

Snétberger comes from a Roma family. At the age of thirteen he attended music school and learned to play classical guitar. From 1977 to 1981 he studied at the Béla Bartók Jazz Conservatory in Budapest . He became known in Hungary with the Stendhal Trio , which he founded in 1987 with László Dés and Kornél Horváth . In 1988 Snétberger went to Berlin . In addition to working in the Stendhal Trio , he also worked as a soloist and in duo formations: with the vibraphonist David Friedman and, since 1995, with the trumpeter Markus Stockhausen . In addition to the duos, he also performed inJoyosa Quartet with Stockhausen, the Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen and the Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer . In 2005 he founded a trio with Arild Andersen and the Italian drummer Paolo Vinaccia . He also starred with Didier Lockwood , James Moody , Charlie Byrd , Ernie Wilkins , Herb Ellis , Bobby McFerrin , Richard Bona , Michel Godard , Anders Jormin and Joey Baron .

In addition, Snétberger also emerged as a composer. He composed music for films, and in 1995 he wrote his concert for guitar and orchestra For My People .

On January 27, 2011, the German Holocaust Remembrance Day, Snétberger appeared in the plenary session of the German Bundestag , in which, with Zoni Weisz, a Sinto gave the commemorative speech for the first time .

In 2002, Ferenc Snétberger became an honorary citizen of his native Salgótarján and received the Hungarian Order of Merit two years later. In 2005 he was awarded the Franz Liszt Prize in Budapest and in 2014 the Kossuth Prize . His son Toni Snétberger is an actor.

In addition to his musical activities, he founded an international music school (Snétberger Musik Talent Zentrum) in Hungary for socially disadvantaged children and young people, mostly belonging to the Sinti and Roma minority, which opened in 2011.
