Paolo Vinaccia (born March 27, 1954 in Italy ; † July 5, 2019 ) was an Italian jazz musician ( drums , percussion , composition ).

Live and act

Vinaccia was trained as a musician at Italian schools and conservatories. He moved to Norway in 1979 to become a member of the Jonas Fjeld Band , in which he played for three years. Then he belonged to the Oslo Rhythm n Blues Ensemble and then played in various groups with Jon Eberson (also with Sidsel Endresen ) and in the trio with Bjørn Kjellemyr .

Then he worked with Bendik Hofseth , Ole Amund Gjersvik , Terje Rypdal ( Skywards , Vossabrygg ), Frode Alnæs , Mikhail Alperin , but also with Bugge Wesseltoft , Sondre Bratland , Jon Balke and the Miki N'Doye Orchestra. With Palle Mikkelborg and Mike Mainieri he was on tour and in the recording studio. In 2008 he released the highly acclaimed album Live at Belleville as part of Arild Andersen's trio , which was followed by another album in 2014.

Vinaccia has worked as a studio musician on more than 100 albums, including with Morten Harket , Håkon Graf , Dhafer Youssef ( Digital Prophecy ), Miki N'Doye and Knut Reiersrud . In 2004 he composed the music for the feature film The Beautiful Country by Hans Petter Moland . During the Oslo Jazz Festival 2015 he presented his commissioned work Dommedag with Eivind Aarset and the Norwegian Soloist Choir in Oslo Cathedral .

In 2009 he was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in the pancreas. On July 2nd, 2019 he was awarded the honorary award of the Oslo Jazz Festival, the Ella-prisen , "as one of the most important artists of Norwegian jazz".
