Sidsel Endresen
Sidsel Endresen (born June 19, 1952 in Trondheim ) is a Norwegian jazz singer. Her singing style can be described as onomatopoeic and experimental.
Life
Endresen began studying English and anthropology at the University of Oslo in 1978 after spending four years in England as a child and as a young adult. She founded the Sidsel Endresen Band and made a name for herself in the local Oslo music scene. In 1980 she invited the singer Radka Toneff to a workshop of the Norwegian Jazz Federation, where she met the guitarist Jon Eberson . Between 1980 and 1987 she appeared in the role of singer and lyricist in his formation Jon Eberson Group , whose music moved in the field of tension between jazz rock , rhythm & blues and soul . Winning two Spellemann prizes made her known nationwide in the Norwegian jazz scene.
Initially equipped with a record deal with the German jazz label ECM by Manfred Eicher , Sidsel Endresen's solo career began in 1989. ECM released the albums So I Write (1990) and Exile (1994). Both times she was accompanied by Django Bates , Jon Christensen and the young trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær . On the second album, David Darling and Bugge Wesseltoft joined as accompanists. Sidsel Endresen, whose music now offered more space for improvisation and the joy of experimentation, developed her own onomatopoeic style during this time, which made her known beyond the Norwegian borders. With the Norwegian keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft as a duo, Sidsel Endresen released three further recordings that have been recognized worldwide - Nightsong (1994), Duplex Ride (1998) and Out Here. In There (2002). At the same time, Sidsel Endresen performed between 1995 and 1999 with the freely improvising vocal trio ESE - together with Elin Rosseland and Eldbjørg Raknes . In 1999 she composed the one-person opera Lautleben with Rolf Wallin , which will be performed in Ultima (1999), Bergen (2000), Stockholm (2001) and in Great Britain (2001). Between 2000 and 2002 she toured Europe with the solo project Undertow . In addition, there was commissioned work for various European festivals, stage and dance projects as well as the film music for Expedition (2000) by Runi Langum . Together with the Norwegian pianist Christian Wallumrød , Sidsel Endresen released the CD Merriwinkle in 2004 and went on a tour, partly reinforced by the electronic sound tinkerer and producer Helge Sten . At the Moers Festival 2007 she performed with the electro-acoustic duo Humcrush (Ståle Storløkken - keyb, electr, Thomas Strønen - dr, electr) (with whom the album Ha! Was released in 2011 ); in October 2007 she played in the formation Das Mollsche Gesetz by Udo Moll , Sebastian Gramss , and Matthias Muche . The album Bell Time (2011) was created with Bram Stadhouders and Jim Black , with Jan Bang , Erik Honoré, David Sylvian and Arve Henriksen Uncommon Deities (2012). In recent years she has been touring with Stian Westerhus , with whom she also released two albums on Rune Grammofon . In 2013 she was invited by Claudio Puntin together with Samuel Rohrer and Skuli Sverrisson to the Tonspuren Irsee festival founded by Martina Taubenberger .
Awards
Endresen received a Spellemann Prize in 1981 in the Rock category together with Jon Eberson, with whom she received another Spellemann Prize in 1984. In 1993 she was honored with the first Radka Toneff Minnepris . In 1998 and 2002 further Spellemann prizes followed in the open category together with Bugge Wesseltoft. In 2000 she was awarded the Buddy Prize.
