Pål Thowsen (born July 15, 1955 in Lillestrøm ) is a Norwegian jazz drummer.

Act

Thowsen first appeared professionally in 1973 with the quartet of Jon Eberson , then he belonged to the orchestra of Erik and Jon Balke (1973-77) and the jazz rock band Moose Loose (1974-75; LP Elgen er los ). He earned an international reputation as a member of Arild Andersen's Quartet (1974 to 1979), with whom he performed throughout Europe and recorded four albums. He also worked with the pianist Ketil Bjørnstad , with whom he recorded several albums between 1974 and 1990. From 1977 he also belonged to the quintet of the singer Radka Toneff .

Thowsen has released several albums under his own name. He won the Spellemann prize in 1977 in jazz together with Jon Christensen for the album No Time for Time and the Spellemann prize in 1979 in jazz for his album Surprise . From 1981 to 1984 he belonged to the trio of the guitarist Terje Rypdal , from 1982 to 1997 the Jazz Punk Ensemble . From 1995 he was also a member of the Odd Riisnæs quartet . In 1998 he contributed to Terje Gewelt's album Hide and Seek and then worked with saxophonist Arild Stav. Then he worked with the group of Dag Arnesen and in the trio of Sinnika Langeland , in 2016 in the Eberson Funk Ensemble and from 2018 again in the quartet of Rypdal.

Thowsen teaches at Norwegian Music College .
