Erik Balke

Erik Balke (born November 7, 1953 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( saxophone ) who has also emerged as director of the Lille Frøen Saksofonkvartett .

Balke is the older brother of jazz musician Jon Balke ; He played in the rock jazz band Unis since the early 1970s, then in groups with his brother in 1973 and 1974, before leading a band with Vidar Johansen . He was also active in the Big Band at the University of Oslo , and then from 1977 to 1979 he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston .

Balke came back to Norway and founded the Lille Frøen Saksofonkvartett with Vidar Johansen, Arne Frang and Odd Riisnæs / Tore Brunborg / Olav Dale , which he directed until 1989. He was also a member of the trio of Carl Morten Iversen (1980–81). He then played with the Gambian / Norwegian Friendship Orchestra (1982) and with Tamma , who worked with Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell . Since 1983 he belonged to the Jazzpunkensemblet , furthermore to Oslo 13 , to Extended Noise (1983–94) and to Position Alpha (1984–1986). He also worked with Audun Kleive , Nils Petter Molvær , Torbjørn Sunde , Tore Brunborg and Bugge Wesseltoft .

He was then chairman of the Foreningen norske jazzmusikere . After a stay in Berlin, he worked in groups like Baktruppen and Ignore .
