Ibrahima Solo Cissokho (also solo Sissoko ; * 26. May 1963 in Ziguinchor , Casamance , † 4. May 2019 in Oslo ) was a Senegalese jazz - and Mbalax musician. He played kora and djembe and also performed as a guitarist and bassist.

Live and act

Cissokho came from a Senegalese griot family that also includes musicians such as Kausu Kouyate and Seckou Keita . He was introduced to the family's griot tradition as a child and learned to play the kora at the age of seven.

He lived in France and England, where the Cissokho family was represented by the band Jalikunda , with whom he performed at the Glastonbury Festival and recorded the album Lindiane (2003). He also worked with musicians such as Touré Kunda and Ali Farka Touré . In 1995 he moved to Norway. The following year , the album Frå Senegal til Setesdal (1997) was created there in collaboration with Kouame Sereba , Bjørgulv Straume and the folk singer Kirsten Bråten Berg .

From a spontaneous jam session in 1998 with the folk musician Ellika Frisell , the album Tretakt Takissaba was created in 2002 , which received the BBC World Music Award in the Boundary Crossing category the following year . With their own group Cissokho System (with Aliou Cissokho , Kossa Diomande and the Norwegians Olav Torget , Tonny Kluften and Harald Skullerud ) the Mbalax-style album Kaira (2003) was created. He also performed with the Miki N'Doye Orchestra . He also played with the Lithuanian Kanklės player Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė , with whom the album Solo & Indrė (2015) was created, as well as with Ale Möller and with the blues musician Eric Bibb , with whom he went on tour and can be heard on the album Global Griot .

Cissokho died in Oslo after a long illness which had made it impossible for him to perform in the last few years.
