Touré Kunda

Touré Kunda is a band from Senegal that performs West African music. The group has also worked with Carlos Santana and the Talking Heads .

History of the band

The core of the group are the siblings Ismaïla and Sixu Tidiane Touré, who were guided by their older brother Amadou Touré. In 1979 the band migrated to Paris, where they released their first album Ismaïla do Sixu in large cast. The band sings in different languages ​​of West Africa. The main musical influences of their songs are mbalax and reggae ; Touré Kunda combined these into a style of their own, which they called Djambaadong .

In 1983, Amadu Touré, the band leader, died of a heart attack. The remainder reunited with their younger brother Ousemane and decided to continue after the tribute album Amadou-Tilo . They are best known in France and West Africa; of the album Live Paris Ziguinchor sold more than a quarter of a million copies. Their greatest success in other countries was when they took part in Santana's title Africa Bamba (from his album Supernatural ).

The group is also politically active and supported the United Nations Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World .
