Putumayo World Music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Putumayo World Music is a music label from New York City , USA , which specializes in world music and here in turn on compilations . It was founded in 1993 by Dan Storper, who had been running a well-known fashion boutique since 1975, which was known for clothing with folk design and handicrafts from Latin America.

founding

Storper graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in Latin American Studies in 1973 and then traveled to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. In Colombia he was probably impressed by the Putumayo Valley, because after him he named his first company, the Putumayo Clothing Company . Soon the media became aware of his clothing; In 1985 he owned three stores and supplied another 600. Customers included Jane Fonda and Mia Farrow . In 1991 he saw a live concert by Kotoja , an African band from the San Francisco Bay Area , and was so enthusiastic that he decided to found Putumayo World Music. In 1993 the first two world music samplers appeared.

success

Storper's productions were so successful that in 1997 he sold the clothing stores to devote himself entirely to A&R ; he is supported by the musicologist Jacob Edgar. In 2000 Putumayo Europe was founded in Hilversum , so that Putumayo now has branches in 12 countries. Since inception, Putumayo has sold over 15 million CDs.

Artwork

The CDs have a high recognition value , as all covers are designed by Nicola Heindl and have a colorful, folk style.
