The printing house Galrev (rarer Galrev and (incorrectly) Galrev Verlag ) was a German publisher based in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin , which existed from 1990 to 2016.

The printing house Galrev was founded shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 as an author publisher in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . The publishing house was Lychener Straße 73. With the publishing houses BasisDruck , Janus Press Gerhard Wolf and the Ch. Links Verlag , the printing house Galrev was an important new publishing house in East Germany after 1989.

After preliminary talks in late 1989 East Berlin authors and publishers of the Met in January 1990 DDR appeared self-published magazines Ariadne factory , Braegen , Liane and use . The plan was to publish a high-circulation literary magazine for the East based on the model of the literary magazine Lettre . The prerequisite for this seemed to be the founding of a publishing house with an attached print shop and a café as a place for literary public and communication. The publisher's name Galrev and the name of the literary café Kiryl , anagrams of the words publisher and poetry, refer to the language-critical literature of Prenzlauer Berg in the 1980s.

Registered as a general partnership on May 4, 1990 , the structure of the publishing house was based on the model of the Rotbuch publishing house , i. H. his employees were also shareholders. The founders of the publishing house were Sascha Anderson , Egmont Hesse , Henryk Gericke 1990–93, Andreas Koziol 1990–93, Klaus Michael (Michael Thulin) 1990–92, Rainer Schedlinski and Joerg Waehner 1990–92. In the absence of business premises, the publisher was initially registered at the private address of Klaus Michael. Since autumn 1990 the art historian Heinz Havemeister 1990–93, the critic Cornelia Jentzsch 1991–93 and the photographer Susanne Schleyer 1990–92 joined the team. Klaus Michael and Rainer Schedlinski were the managing directors from 1990–92, and since 1992 Egmont Hesse in collaboration with Rainer Schedlinski. On November 10, 1990, the publishing house at Lychener Strasse 73 was opened with guests from literature and art, the press and politics, including Walter Momper and Tino Schwierzina . The opening of the publishing café Kiryl , which was operated at times by authors (e.g. Detlef Opitz ), followed at the end of November 1990. The sculptor Michael Blumhagen took over the expansion until his expatriation in 1982 in the Jena GDR opposition in the vicinity of Matthias Domaschk and Roland Jahn are active. After initial negotiations with SOVA (Helmut Richter), the publishing house was delivered from 1991 by CVK-Cornelsen Verlagkontor.

The publishing house wanted to offer authors a permanent forum who had emerged through innovative aesthetic and poetological approaches or who could only publish themselves until 1989. It corresponded to the intention to give the literary and art scene of Prenzlauer Berg and the literature published in the artistic samizdat a public, supra-regional distribution structures and institutional anchoring beyond the end of the GDR . In addition, there was a discussion of related literary movements in England , France , Russia , the Czech Republic, the USA and in the literary scenes of West Germany and West Berlin, which were reflected in the publishing program from 1991 onwards. In addition, authors who had to leave the GDR were relocated. The company's idea was to react quickly and inexpensively to new developments with the publishing house's printing company, to finance the publishing house through external contracts and to continue the artistic tradition of graphically designed books, folders and magazines, which had been cultivated since Expressionism and also in the GDR, with well-known artists and designers . It is characterized by the high quality design of the books and the cross-genre approaches. Since, despite repeated announcements, there was no publication of a high-circulation, national literary magazine (in reference to Samuel Beckett , a magazine with the title Godeau was in discussion), the focus of the publishing program was on poetry and experimental literature, on translations, concept books and anthologies. The first publisher publications were the anthology Abriss der Ariadnefabrik , which included texts from the unofficial journal of the same name published in 1986–1990, and ten volumes of poetry by Stefan Döring and SoJa by Bert Papenfuß . They were presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 1990 , but had not yet been produced in the company's own print shop.

After her exposure as an unofficial employee of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR in October 1991 or January 1992, Sascha Anderson left the publishing house for a short time until June 1992, Rainer Schedlinski suspended his functions, but remained a partner. With the mandate of an authors' conference in January 1992, the publishing house continued its work. After differences about how to deal with the past and because a fundamental reorientation of the publishing program with greater involvement of prose, essay writing and documentation was not possible, numerous employees left the publishing house from mid-1992. Also due to the loss of reputation associated with the Stasi debate, publishing activity declined sharply since the mid-1990s and publishing activities soon came to a virtual standstill. As a result, the publisher's representatives, the sales department and the deliverers were terminated and the publisher was converted into a layout and printing company with an attached poetry production. In total, more than 100 titles have been published by authors from Germany , England , France , Romania , Russia , the Czech Republic and the USA , among others . Egmont Hesse and Rainer Schedlinski managed the backlist and the website of the publisher.
