Barbara Bongartz

Barbara Bongartz (born September 11, 1957 in Cologne ) is a German writer of German-French origin. She writes novels, short stories, essays, texts on the visual arts, book reviews and radio reports.

Life

Bongartz studied theater, film and television studies , German literature and philosophy in Paris, Munich and Cologne. In 1984 she obtained her master's degree from the University of Cologne . From 1982 to 1988 she worked as a freelance assistant director and director on documentaries on the visual arts.

In 1989 she did her doctorate at the Institute for Media Culture and Theater at the University of Cologne under Elmar Buck , a student of Hans Mayer .

From 1990 to 1996 Barbara Bongartz was a research assistant at the Institute for Media Culture and Theater at the University of Cologne. She began a habilitation with the working title “Film und Melancholie”, which she broke off when her first novel “Local Passions - Compilationes” was published. From 1996 she lived as a freelance writer in Düsseldorf and New York. Editions and special editions of her writings were created in collaboration with the visual artist Gisela Kleinlein . She has lived in Berlin since 2002 and, after working in Islamabad, Dushanbe and Algiers, in Brandenburg since 2019. Barbara Bongartz is married to the lawyer and diplomat Pascal Richter .

Bongartz is a member of the PEN Center Germany .
