Dieter Schlesak

Dieter Schlesak (born August 7, 1934 in Sighișoara , Romania ; † March 29, 2019 in Camaiore , Italy ) was a German writer .

Life

Career

After graduating from high school, Dieter Schlesak taught at the elementary school in Denndorf for two years . From 1954 to 1959 he studied German at the University of Bucharest . He then worked until 1969 as editor of the Bucharest magazine Neue Literatur and as an author and translator.

In 1968, at the beginning of the “little thaw” in the Socialist Republic of Romania , Schlesak joined the Romanian Communist Party . In 1969 he did not return to Romania from a trip to the Federal Republic of Germany and since then has lived as a freelance writer alternately in Stuttgart and Camaiore / Italy, where he died in March 2019 at the age of 84.

Schlesak wrote poetry, essays, novels and worked as an editor and translator. Among other things, he was a member of the PEN Center Germany , the PEN Center for German-speaking authors abroad .

Entanglement with the Romanian secret service

In the files of the Romanian secret service Securitate , Schlesak was listed on about 70 handwritten pages as an unofficial employee under the code name "Ehrlich". Schlesak denied having worked for the secret service, pointed to contradictions in the files and described the records as falsifications. Stefan Sienerth , director at the Institute for German Culture and History of Southeast Europe at the LMU Munich, believed that a forgery of all of Schlesak's Securitate files was unlikely.

In 2010, while studying his files, Schlesak came across reports from his friends and acquaintances, including Oskar Pastior . In his other publications, Schlesak accused other fellow writers and journalists of spying, such as Dieter Roth, then editor at the Bucharest youth publishing house, Anna Bretz , then editor of the Bucharest monthly Volk und Kultur , the literary historian Heinz Stănescu , Alfred Kittner and his former editorial colleague Claus Stephani .

Among other things, Schlesak alleged that Pastior was responsible for the suicide of the poet Georg Hoprich . The literary critic Ernest Wichner countered that Schlesak could only cite a conversation with Hans Bergel as the source as the basis for this accusation , a beer table saga to be interpreted in one way or another by hearsay as required. "

In 2012, Schlesak presented a manuscript entitled The Hell of Treason. The Romanian secret service, eyewitness reports, documents, own experiences finished in which he dealt with entanglements and injuries. The manuscript has so far remained unpublished.

For an assembly of poems published in New Literature in 1963 , including “The Sun Ship”, in the opinion of the Reformed clergyman Gerd Zikeli , Schlesak got himself “the kiss of the muses” from Ingeborg Bachmann's “The Great Freight”. The writer Ingmar Brantsch was of the opinion that Schlesak had "ennobled Ingeborg Bachmann in a communist way"

In 2006, Schlesak's documentary novel Capesius was published. The Auschwitz Pharmacist - a complex collage of story, documentation and flashback , as the blurb says. The reception of the historical testimony was very different; on the one hand, the book earned him a lot of praise and recognition; it has been translated into ten languages, most recently into English and Spanish, but on the other hand the book met with rejection, especially from Transylvanian-Saxon compatriots, some of whom referred to it as “dirtiers”.

Claus Stephani raised allegations of plagiarism against Schlesak: On pages 339/40 he quoted without reference from Stephani's works, for example out of pain to the point of death. A life report , New Literature (Bucharest) 3/7, July 1984, pp. 43–47. In the novel Fatherland Days, Schlesak also copied on pages 127 ff. From Stephani's Oral History volumes Oben im Wassertal (Bucharest 1970) and Inquired Ways (Bucharest 1975).
