Georg Aescht

Georg Aescht (born September 28, 1953 in Zeiden , Transylvania , People's Republic of Romania ) is a Transylvanian literary critic , publicist and translator of Romanian literature into German.

life and work

After studying German and English at the Babes-Bolyai University and George Aescht as a German teacher at the German department of a high school in was Cluj operates. As a student he worked as an editor for the German-language student magazine Echinox .

In addition to literary-critical articles in the German-language publications Echinox, Karpatenrundschau , Neue Literatur , Neuer Weg , he translated Romanian authors and worked on high school textbooks for German literature.

Since 1991 Aescht has been an editor at the “Foundation for German Culture in Eastern Europe” (formerly: “Foundation for East German Culture Council”) in Königswinter , where he edits the “cultural and political correspondence”. Since 2014 he has also worked as an editor at the Institute for German Culture and History of Southeast Europe at the LMU Munich .

Since 2016 he has been chairman of the Culture Prize Court, which annually awards the Transylvanian-Saxon Culture Prize. In 2019, his translation from the Romanian of the novel The Forest of the Hanged by Liviu Rebreanu was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize.
