Al Stillman (born June 26, 1906 in New York , † February 17, 1979 there ) was an American songwriter .

Life

Stillman studied at New York University and then worked for columnist Franklin P. Adams . From 1933 he was staff writer for the Radio City Music Hall . His lyrics have been set to music by composers such as Arthur Schwartz , George Gershwin , Ernesto Lecuona , Fred Ahlert , Percy Faith , Paul McGrane , Irvin Graham , Jimmy Shirl and Ervin Drake and by interpreters such as Ella Fitzgerald ( I'm Not Complaining , I'm Up a Tree , Don'cha Go 'Way Mad ) and Billie Holiday ( I Wish I Had You , With Thee I Swing , It's Not for Me to Say ).

In collaboration with the composer Robert Allen , songs for The Four Lads ( Moments to Remember , No, Not Much! ), Johnny Mathis ( Chances Are , It's Not for Me to Say ) and Perry Como ( Home for the Holidays , My One) were created and Only Heart , You Alone ). Cher had a top ten hit with The Way of Love in 1972 . Stillman has also written for stage productions such as Virginia , It Happens on Ice , Stars on Ice , Howdy , Icetime of 948, and Mr. Ice , and his songs have been used in numerous film and television productions. In 1982 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame .
