Radio City Music Hall
The Radio City Music Hall is a concert hall in the heart of Manhattan in New York City . The building is part of the Rockefeller Center and is opposite the Comcast Building , the main building of the Rockefeller Center.
The Radio City Music Hall was built in the 1920s and was then considered a Mecca for radio broadcasting of musical sounds. The theater opened to the public on December 27, 1932 with a spectacular stage show. However, the performance planned as a return to high-class vaudeville did not have the hoped-for success. As early as January 11, 1933, the first film was shown on the huge screen: Frank Capra's The Bitter Tea of General Yen with Barbara Stanwyck . With 5,933 seats, the Radio City Music Hall was the world's largest movie theater when it opened. Up to 1979, films framed by live performances were shown there in up to four performances a day. After a renovation, the hall was reopened in 1980 and has only occasionally been used as a cinema. The focus is now on shows and concerts.
The annual MTV Video Music Awards have been held there since 1999 . After taking place in Miami for two consecutive years in 2004, the event returned to Radio City Music Hall on August 31, 2006. Since 1997 (with the exception of 1999, 2011 and 2012) the Tony Awards , the prizes for the best musicals and plays on Broadway, have been held here.
The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall are considered one of the best show dance groups in the world. The best-known number is the “ Parade of the wooden soldiers ” from the Christmas show “Radio City Christmas Spectacular”, which is also shown in most of the other shows. Offshoots of the Rockettes also went on tour and appeared at times in other cities, e.g. B. in Las Vegas .
From 2006 to 2014 it was the venue for the NFL Draft , in which the teams from the NFL secure the rights to available amateur and youth players.
