The Institute for German Culture and History of Southeast Europe e. V. (IKGS) is a scientific research institution at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) , which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) based on a resolution of the German Bundestag.

The IKGS researches and documents German culture and history in the network of relationships between the cultural regions of Southeast Europe. In cooperation with universities and research institutions in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, the institute promotes cross-border dialogue as well as national and international scientific discourse through research projects, specialist conferences, author readings and publications. In its two research areas “German Literature and Language History of East Central and Southeastern Europe” and “History of East Central and Southeastern Europe” it carries out interdisciplinary projects, particularly on the 19th and 20th centuries.

The IKGS has had the status of a scientific institution at the LMU Munich since 2004. The institute's academic staff are lecturers at LMU in the fields of “Modern German Literature” and “History of Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe”. In addition, the institute offers courses in Bucharest / Bucureşti, Hermannstadt / Sibiu, Klausenburg / Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Budapest, Fünfkirchen / Pécs (Hungary), Ljubljana / Ljubljana (Slovenia) and at other universities in Southeast Europe. It supports and promotes students and young researchers from Germany and the Southeast European countries.

The IKGS was re-established on November 17, 2001 as a scientific research institution. Until then, the institute was sponsored by the Südostdeutsche Kulturwerk e. V., whose rights and obligations it entered on August 6, 2002. In 2004–2009 and 2006–2011, the IKGS supervised the endowed professorships for “German Literature in Southeast Central Europe” at the University of Klausenburg / Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and for “German History and Culture in Southeast Central Europe ”at the University of Fünfkirchen / Pécs (Hungary).

Publications

IKGS publishing house

The books of the IKGS publishing house appear in the scientific series "Publications of the Institute for German Culture and History of Southeast Europe at the LMU Munich". Literary and linguistic history as well as the history and contemporary history of Southeast Europe form the thematic focus.

"Reflections"

The periodical of the IKGS, "Spiegelungen - Zeitschrift für Deutschen Kultur und Geschichte Südosteuropas", from 1952 to 2005 "Südostdeutsche Vierteljahresblätter", offers a wide range of information on the literature, culture and history of Germans in the categories "Essays" and "Literary Texts" Southeastern Europe and its neighbors (print run: 700 copies). In the “Forum”, “New Books” and “Rundschau” sections, conference reports and reviews are published.

Danubiana Carpathica

The IKGS is involved in the publication of the periodical "Danubiana Carpathica - Yearbook for History and Culture in the German Settlement Areas of Southeast Europe". The yearbook continues the “Southeast German Archive” in a new form and with partially changed content and is edited in cooperation with the Commission for the History and Culture of Germans in Southeast Europe and the Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies (Tübingen).

Archives and Library

The archive provides research with the estates of German-speaking writers from southeastern Europe and documents German-language periodicals through its microfilm holdings. The reference library collects books, magazines, newspapers and maps on German literature, history and regional studies in East Central and Southeast Europe. She has been involved in the Bavarian Library Association (BVB) since 2003.
