Andrei Gabriel Pleșu (born August 23, 1948 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian philosopher, art historian and politician. He is one of the most important students of Constantin Noica . From 1997 to 1999 Andrei Pleşu was the non-party Foreign Minister of Romania and intensified rapprochement with the West. He is a member of various scientific academies. He has received numerous awards for his political and literary work.

Life and works

After receiving his doctorate in 1980 with a dissertation on "The feeling of nature in European culture", he was initially a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he lectured on the history of modern Romanian art, but had to leave the educational sector in 1982 for political reasons . In 1989 he was exiled to the village of Tescani because he had contact with the opposition poet Mircea Dinescu . After the revolution in 1989 and the overthrow of the government, he was minister of culture until 1991. In 1991 he was appointed professor for the philosophy of religion in Bucharest , and was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley and in Berlin (Fellow in the Wissenschaftskolleg 1991/1992).

In 1993 Pleșu founded the major weekly magazine Dilema (now Dilema veche ).

Andrei Pleșu co-founded the New Europe College in 1994 , which he expanded based on the model of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , New Jersey , and which he still heads today. Wolf Lepenies is one of the supporters of this scientific association - Pleșu gave the laudatory speech at the 2006 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade .

His work The Silence of the Angels is one of the foundations of today's angelology .
