Andreas Gryphius Prize
The Andreas Gryphius Prize is a German literary prize .
history
The Andreas Gryphius Prize, which primarily honors the entire work, was first awarded in 1957 in Düsseldorf . Since 1990 it has been awarded by the Esslingen Artists' Guild in Glogau , where Andreas Gryphius was born in 1616 and lived until his death in 1664. The literature prize honors authors and translators whose publications reflect German culture in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and who contribute to understanding between Germans and their eastern neighbors .
The prize was originally endowed with 25,000 DM. In addition, a special prize worth 7,000 DM was awarded, which could also be awarded as a scholarship. Due to austerity measures, the financial support of the artists' guild by the Federal Ministry of the Interior or the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media was discontinued in 2000 . The prize was therefore no longer awarded until 2008.
After the prize money was financed by a private foundation, the prize has been awarded annually since 2009. The prize is not endowed .
