life and work

Benedikt Dyrlich was born the second of six children and grew up in Neudörfel in the Sorbian-Catholic part of Upper Lusatia. The father was a small Sorbian farmer and craftsman. The mother died when he was 16 years old. In 1956 he started school at the Sorbian school in Räckelwitz , which he attended until 1964.

After attending the episcopal pre-seminar in Schöneiche near Berlin , he studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Erfurt . After successfully completing his studies, Dyrlich, who married Monika Rozowski in 1973, worked as a nurse in Karl-Marx Stadt and made up for his Abitur in evening classes until 1973. From 1973 to 1975 he worked as a dramaturgist at the German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen , which was followed by a degree in theater studies in Leipzig until 1980 .

In the time of political change in 1989/90 he was active in the Sorbian People's Assembly . In 1990 he was elected to the Saxon state parliament as an SPD member and was also the SPD chairman of the Upper Lusatia sub-district . In the same year Dyrlich was a member of the ›State Constitution Working Group‹, which worked out the draft for the new constitution of the Free State of Saxony . In the state elections in 1994 , he missed re-entry into the state parliament. From 1995 to 2011 he was editor-in-chief of the Sorbian evening newspaper Serbske Nowiny .
