The Ćišinski Prize was founded on July 28, 1956 as a state prize. The award took place every two years by the Minister for Culture of the GDR . The award is given to people who are committed to the culture, literature and language of the Sorbs and Wends . However, it was not only the Sorbs who received the Ćišinski Prize, but also Germans who were able to receive it through their commitment to Sorbian affairs. Since 1982 the prize has been awarded in the birthplace of Jakub Bart-Ćišinski in Panschwitz-Kuckau . As a state award of the GDR, it was last bestowed in 1990 by the de Maizière government , after which the award was suspended.

Since 1995 the award has been made by the Foundation for the Sorbian People . The prize is usually awarded every two years. Outstanding achievements in the field of Sorbian culture, art and science are recognized and promising beginnings in these areas are promoted. It consists of a main prize (endowed with 7,500 euros) and a sponsorship award (endowed with 2,500 euros). The Ćišinski Prize and the Promotion Prize for the Ćišinski Prize are not open to the public. An application is not possible. A board of trustees decides on the award.

The Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Sorbian People confirmed the following composition of the Board of Trustees on January 25, 2013 for the period from 2013 to 2018:
