Jěwa-Marja Čornakec (German Eva-Maria Zschornack ; born January 8, 1959 in Räckelwitz ) is a Sorbian writer , translator and editor . From 1992 to 2011 she was editor-in-chief of the Sorbian cultural magazine Rozhlad .

Life

Jěwa-Marja Čornakec grew up in Ostro ( Upper Sorbian Wotrow ). She attended the Sorbian Advanced High School in Bautzen and graduated from high school in 1977. She then studied at the Technical College for Scientific Librarianship in Leipzig . From 1980 to 1984 she was a scientific librarian at the Sorbian Institute for Teacher Training in Bautzen and then worked at the Institute for Sorbian Folk Research, which was part of the GDR Academy of Sciences . From 1985 to 1990 she studied cultural studies and Sorabistics at the University of Leipzig . She wrote her diploma thesis on the subject of Serbske pismowstwo mjez 1937–1945 ( German Sorbian literature between 1937 and 1945 ). After completing her studies, she returned to the Institute for Sorbian Folk Research. On January 1, 1992, she became editor-in-chief of the Sorbian cultural magazine Rozhlad, which is published in Bautzen . On August 1, 2011, she moved to the Sorbian National Ensemble in Bautzen as a development dramaturge. She lives in Dresden.  

Jěwa-Marja Čornakec is a member of the Sorbian scientific society Maćica Serbska and was elected to its board on March 29, 2008.

Create

In the 1980s, Čornakec came out with short prose in Upper Sorbian and German, which appeared in various anthologies and magazines. Later she turned increasingly to children's literature , authored several children's books and libretti for children's musicals for the Sorbian National Ensemble . On March 1, 2009, her first play W sćinje swěčki (German In the Shadow of the Candle ) had its world premiere at the German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen . As a translator, she has mainly translated 19th century Sorbian poetry into German.

Awards

On July 4, 2011, the Foundation for the Sorbian People Jěwa-Marja Čornakec awarded the Ćišinski Prize for her services as an author of Sorbian children's literature and Sorbian plays.
