Józef Nowak (writer)

Józef Nowak-Radworski (born January 5, 1895 in Ostro , † January 1, 1978 in Bautzen ) was a Sorbian pastor , poet , playwright and journalist .

Life

Józef Nowak was born in 1895 as the son of a farmer in Ostro near Bautzen . He attended schools in Bautzen, Reichenberg and Duppau . From 1910 he lived in Prague . From 1915 he went to the German grammar school in Prague and then studied theology at the Wendish seminary until 1919 , where he headed the Lusatian student association Serbowka . In 1916 and 1919 Nowak organized the 42nd and 45th Sorbian student meetings , the Schadźowanka .

In 1920 he continued his studies in Paderborn . In the same year Nowak was ordained a priest. He then served in the Catholic parish in Crostwitz until 1923 . He was also involved in Domowina and in 1921 became a member of the Sorbian scientific society Maćica Serbska . In 1922 Nowak became editor-in-chief of the Sorbian literary magazine Łužica . From 1923 to 1927 Nowak served as a priest in Zittau and then until 1930 in Bautzen . From 1927 to 1931 he was editor-in-chief of the Catholic-Sorbian magazine Katolski Posoł .

In 1931 Nowak was appointed rector of the Catholic parish Radibor . He served there until 1940, after which he was removed from office at the urging of the Nazi authorities and became chaplain at the Hofkirche Dresden . In 1944 Nowak was arrested by the GeStaPo because he did not submit to the ideology of the Nazi regime . After the end of the Second World War he returned to Radibor and was rector until he retired in 1968. 1959 Nowak was again editor-in-chief of Katolski Posoł.

In 1970 Nowak was awarded the Ćišinski Prize . Ten years after his death, the 1988 International Festival of Sorbian Poetry was dedicated to him. The festival held in 2015 was again dedicated to him on the occasion of his 120th birthday.
