Schadźowanka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The annual meetings of Sorbian students are called Schadźowanka ( Upper Sorbian ) or Schadowanka ( Lower Sorbian ) .

history

The tradition began as a gathering of Sorbian students in 1875, when students under the leadership of Arnošt Muka and Jakub Bart-Ćišinski tried to mobilize the Sorbian population for a national and cultural movement. The Young Sorbian movement emerged from the annual meetings and had a great influence on the spiritual and cultural life of the Sorbs.

At first, the meetings always took place in August, and since the 1970s in November, there were no official meetings during the two world wars. In addition to the Upper Sorbian meeting, there has also been an event for the Lower Sorbian language community in Cottbus since 1984 . The central part of both events today is a cultural program consisting of sketches, music and dance, in which Sorbian students from different places of study (especially Dresden , Leipzig , Chemnitz ) and pupils from the two Sorbian high schools take part.

Organizationally, it has been an in-house project of the Foundation for the Sorbian People since the 1990s , with the content being in the hands of the students.
