Jakub Bart-Ćišinski ( listen ? / I ; officially German Jacob Barth ; * August 20, 1856 in Kuckau ; † October 16, 1909 in Panschwitz ) was a Catholic priest and one of the most important Sorbian poets of the past. Audio file / audio sample

Bart, the son of a small farmer, attended the monastery school in Kuckau, the Catholic grammar school in Bautzen and the Lesser Town grammar school in Prague from 1862 to 1878 . From 1878 to 1881 he studied Catholic theology in Prague. He then worked from 1883 to 1901 as a chaplain in Ralbitz , Radibor , Schirgiswalde , at the Catholic Court Church in Dresden and in Chemnitz . After he was appointed parish administrator in Radeberg in 1901, his involuntary stay of over 16 years outside of the Sorbian settlement area ended in 1903 with an early retirement and a return to Panschwitz.

Oriented towards Czech Parnassism, whose important representative Jaroslav Vrchlický he found recognition, he was the first to introduce elements of secondary literary style formations after the establishment of Sorbian national literature by Handrij Zejler (1804–1872) . As a Catholic clergyman , he was constantly in conflict with the church authorities. As a result of numerous transfers to pastoral positions outside the Sorbian-speaking Upper Lusatia, he was not allowed to serve his own people, the Sorbs, as a clergyman for many years.

Ćišinski (a pseudonym that means "the silence") is known primarily for his perfectly shaped sonnets . He also wrote ballads , dramas and a first attempt at a Sorbian novel Narodowc a wotrodźenc ("Patriot and Renegade"). One of his most famous works is his poem Moje serbske wuznaće ("My Sorbian Confession") , which he wrote at a young age .

His poetry is on a high level. Since Bart-Ćišinski's poems have rarely been translated, however, they are only accessible to a few interested parties in Germany (and abroad).
