The Serbowka (German "Sorbin" in the sense of "the Sorbian") was an association of Sorbian Catholic students and high school students in Prague .

It was founded on October 21, 1846 at the Wendish seminar and was the first Sorbian student association outside Germany. The main aim of the association was to maintain and promote the Sorbian language and culture and thus to strengthen the Sorbian national consciousness of its members. A lively cultural exchange took place with student associations of other Slavic peoples.

Relocation to Bautzen and Erfurt

With the dissolution of the Wendish seminary in 1922 , the Serbowka was also suspended. In 1923 the Free Association of Catholic Clergy of Wendish Lusatia in Bautzen took on the additional designation "Łužiska Serbowka" and supported the re-establishment of the Serbowka in Bautzen. According to the 1923 statues, the original membership and purpose were retained:

"§ 3 Every student Wende who is preparing for the Catholic priesthood can become a member of the Serbowka."

In 1925 a Sorbian language association Serbowka was founded at the Charles University in Prague, which sees itself in the tradition of Serbowka, but opened up to Sorbian students of all disciplines. Disbanded on March 19, 1939 when the Wehrmacht marched into Prague, the association was continued in Prague in 1946 and, from 1975, at the Philosophical-Theological Institute in Erfurt. In the absence of Sorbian students, the association's activities are suspended.

Significant members

Important Sorbian intellectuals such as Michał Hórnik , Jakub Bart-Ćišinski , Jakub Lorenc-Zalěski and Jakub Skala were members of the "Serbowka" at the Wendish seminary.
