Jan Wornar

Jan Wornar (born December 7, 1934 in Horka ; † May 20, 1999 in Räckelwitz ) was a Sorbian writer.

Life

Wornar, son of a Steinspeller , went to school in Crostwitz , Varnsdorf and Bautzen . After graduating from high school, he studied sport at the DHfK and Sorabistics at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1953 to 1957 . From 1958 he worked as a teacher at the Sorbian High School (later: Sorbian Polytechnic High School) in Bautzen, from 1974 then at the Sorbian School in Ralbitz .

As a writer, Wornar mainly wrote books for children and young people. One of his most successful books was Čapla a Hapla (1969; German as Im Lande des Giant ), in which the boy Čapla and the horse Hapla undertake a journey through the Sorbian world of legends. In addition, radio plays and children's plays as well as translations into Upper Sorbian were created. Some of his books have been translated into German, Czech, Ukrainian, Lithuanian and Polish.

Wornar received the Domowina Literature Prize in 1970 and 1981 and the Ćišinski Prize in 1988 . In 1987 he was elected chairman of the working group of Sorbian writers in the GDR writers' association.
