Life

From 1937 to 1940, Fischer completed an apprenticeship as a designer and decorator at the Union department store in Berlin. Then he was a soldier. After his release from Soviet captivity at the end of 1948, he worked as a picture editor in Berlin.

Fischer had been a freelance graphic artist since 1954. He worked for various publishers, including the children's book publisher, Neues Leben, Altberliner Verlag , Berliner Verlag , Domowina-Verlag and the German military publisher . Fischer illustrated around 400 books. He used various techniques - pen and ink drawings, scraping techniques and watercolor.

In 1957 a four-volume edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published by Kinderbuchverlag; 1961 Egon and Joachim Wohlgemuth's eighth wonder of the world published by Neues Leben - the satirical-critical youth novel became a bestseller in the GDR; 1969 shooting stars from Gerd Bieker, also published by Neues Leben.

In the series Exciting tells he specialized in science fiction novels. For over forty titles, he designed the complete appearance from the cover to the cover sheet to full and half-page illustrations, mainly in black and white. Examples are Das Rätsel Sigma by Karl-Heinz Tuschel , Antarktis 2020 or The Cosmodrome in Crater Bond by Alexander Kröger and Alarm in the Transterra Tunnel by Michael Szameit .

He was particularly committed to the children. His drawings and comics can be found regularly in the children's magazines Frösi , Atze , drum , ABC-Zeitung and Bummi . With a lot of love and empathy, the father of two daughters always tried to capture the child's naivete in pictures.

For more than 30 years he illustrated mainly short stories for the magazines Wochenpost , Neue Berliner Illustrierte and Freie Welt from the Berlin publishing house . He died on September 22, 2018 in Berlin. An extensive deposit of his artistic work can be found in the collection of the children's and youth book department of the Berlin State Library .
