Atze was the name of a youth magazine in the GDR . The small paintings magazine was published from 1955 to 1991 monthly with a circulation of up to 549,600 copies in Junge Welt - Verlag .

It was published by the Central Council of the FDJ , cost 20 Pfennig and was addressed to the members of the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann . Klaus Hilbig, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Der Junge Pionier - later drum  - published the first issues on his own initiative. A license application made a few days earlier had been rejected.

Most of the illustrated stories published there dealt with the October Revolution , the communist resistance against National Socialism , or partisan stories , but also voyages of discovery such as that of Columbus and the like. The apolitical mouse comic Fix und Fax by Jürgen Kieser, which has appeared in Atze since 1958, was particularly popular with readers . From 1967 the series Pat's travel adventure was printed, the episodes of which always contained a competition.

In many elementary schools in the GDR, the “Young Fire Protection Assistants” working groups were founded in the 1960s, for which decommissioned fire engines were converted into information vehicles; until 1990 these were referred to as "Atze fire brigades". The Atze editorial team supported the development of the next generation and fire prevention education for children and young people with regular reports. The GDR German television radio also addressed the work of the Atze fire brigades, preferably in its holiday program.
