Neudörfel , in Upper Sorbian Nowa Wjeska , is a village in the center of the Saxon district of Bautzen . It belongs to Upper Lusatia and belongs to the municipality of Räckelwitz . The place belongs to the core of the Sorbian settlement area and has about 160 inhabitants.

The place name has the same meaning in both languages ​​( nowa = "new", wjeska = "small village").

geography

Neudörfel is located 20 kilometers northwest of Bautzen and ten kilometers east of Kamenz on both sides of the monastery water at 150  m above sea level. NN. The closer environment in the north and west - the so-called "Netherlands" ( Delany ) of the former St. Marienstern monastery care - is flat and used for agriculture. In the southeast, however, the area rises to a height of 200 meters. The neighboring town of Horka got its name ("hill") from this fact. To the west of Neudörfel (towards Deutschbaselitz ) there are large forest areas.

The place is an extended alley village along the monastery water, which runs from south to north through Neudörfel. The " Teichhäuser " settlement is located about 500 meters to the north . It is named after the fish ponds that were located north of Neudörfel on the right bank of the monastery water until the 19th century and were later replaced by fields. About one kilometer to the northwest is the group of houses " Dreihäuser " (Sorb. Horni Hajnk , "mountain forester"), Jurij Brězan's long-term home .

The main area of ​​the Bautzen district is in Neudörfel.

Neudörfel is first mentioned in 1617 as Newdorff . That is relatively late for Upper Lusatian standards. In the 17th century the manor Räckelwitz held the manor. The current form of the name appears for the first time in 1768.

In 1890 the place had 132 inhabitants.

In his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka does not show any separate figures for Neudörfel in the 1880s. However, almost all of the residents of Räckelwitz, to which Neudörfel was counted, were Sorbs. Even today, the absolute majority of the population speaks Sorbian as their mother tongue.
