In addition, there are many small lakes in the immediate vicinity of Deutschbaselitz, which surround the town in the south and east. In addition to the Hofeteich, the large sand ponds and the Istrichteich, the most famous body of water is the 113 hectare large Deutschbaselitzer pond with its two bird islands as part of the nature reserve there .

Deutschbaselitz is the birthplace of the painter and sculptor Georg Baselitz , who was born there as Hans-Georg Kern. Baselitz took his stage name based on his place of birth. Since 2012, the DeutschBaselitz Rundweg , which has been awarded the “Place of Ideas”, has been inviting visitors to experience Deutschbaselitz and the pond landscape through the eyes of the painter with installations by the artists Anne Hasselbach and Rainer Düvell.

Baselitz was first mentioned in 1225. From 1532 to 1542 the Baselitz pond was built and in 1549 the place fell back to Kamenz. In 1556 Baselitz was added to the Pönickau family . In 1746 Baselitz was first referred to as Deutschbaselitz and in 1800 39 families lived in the village. The local school was officially opened on November 5, 1844, and a post office was opened in 1890.

According to Arnošt Muka's statistics on the Sorbian population in Lusatia, Deutschbaselitz had a total of 310 inhabitants in 1884, 185 of them Sorbs (60%) and 125 Germans. In the first half of the 20th century, the Sorbian language almost completely disappeared from everyday life. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik only had three Sorbian speakers out of 535 inhabitants.

In 1904 the sports community Deutschbaselitz was founded under the name "Concordia" with around 100 club members. During the First World War , the community lost twelve Baselitzers as a result of fighting. After the seizure of power of the Nazis , the population increased from German Baselitz to 1935 on 444 people who were distributed among 110 households. On November 1, 1937, the place was renamed "Großbaselitz" as part of the National Socialist Germanization of Sorbian place names . In January 1948 it got its original name back. In 1939 the population rose to 460. Towards the end of the Second World War , seven buildings in the community were set on fire as a result of artillery shelling with the Red Army , causing them to burn down. Thirty residents of the community lost their lives as a result of the Second World War.

In 1954 the population was 550. In 1958 the LPG "Lichte Zukunft" was founded, the following year the construction of the local sports field and in 1962 the grand opening of the large Deutschbaselitzer pond on whose developed northern area is now a campsite .

In 1966 the central aqueduct for Deutschbaselitz was completed and in 1970 the local village club was founded. In 1974 the community celebrated its 750th anniversary. As part of the festivities there was a historical parade. In 1983 the community celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Waldbad Deutschbaselitz and in 1987 the population was 400.

The years 1990 to 1995 were dominated by construction projects in Deutschbaselitz. Including the completion of several homes, bridges and the complete renovation of the large pond. In 1994 the community took 2nd place in the competition "Our village should be more beautiful". In the same year the Deutschbaselitzer youth club was founded and the children's club was inaugurated the following year.

In 1995 the population was 511 people. Today Deutschbaselitz is to be regarded as a resort.

Unofficial district coat of arms

The unofficial coat of arms of the former municipality is not recognized by the heraldry and was only designed for tourist marketing. It shows in a symbolized form the creation of the large pond Deutschbaselitz through a bet with the devil from the Upper Lusatian world of legends.

politics

After reunification , the first free local elections took place on May 6, 1990. The CDU won with 55% of the votes cast. At the beginning of June 1990, the previous mayor, Karl Schmidt, handed over the official business to his successor Christian Wacker (CDU). Schmidt resigned from the mayor's office in November 1992 as a result of the misconduct of his advisor. The interim mayor was then deputy mayor Werner Nicolaus, who was in charge of official business until the new mayor election in March 1993.

On March 1, 1993 Arnold Bock (PDS) became the new mayor of Deutschbaselitz. It remained so until the congregation was incorporated into the district town of Kamenz on January 1, 1999. Since then, the district has been represented by a local chief . This is (as of August 2012) the non-party Bernd Schimera.

traffic

Deutschbaselitz is located directly on the S 97 state road . At the village square, the local road from Schiedel to Nebelschütz crosses the S97. The district of Kamenz can be reached with the bus line 187 (Kamenz - Königswartha ) of the transport association Oberelbe . Thanks to the extensive road network, Deutschbaselitz can be reached separately from Kamenz via bicycle paths. In total, the district has 6.205 km of public dedicated local roads, 5.150 km of restricted public roads and 5.370 km of public field and forest paths.

Festive events and traditions

The school in Deutschbaselitz was built in 1931. Georg Baselitz was born here in 1938 . The windows of his family's apartment at that time are now framed in yellow as part of the DeutschBaselitz Rundweg .

Deutschbaselitz organizes several festive events. Carnival events take place annually in spring and have been organized by the village association since 2002. In summer, the traditional eagle shooting takes place on the last weekend in July and the SV Aufbau football tournament in August . The village festival takes place every two years on the local village square.

As everywhere in the Oberlausitz traditional, will take place at the Shrove Tuesday the Zampern instead. On April 30th of the year the maypole is erected with an evening witch's fire . In contrast, the German Baselitz tradition of the so-called "club" is unique. The club is a wooden board on which events and important dates for the district are announced. The wooden board must then be passed on from house to house by hand after taking note of its contents.

Industry, trade and commerce

Deutschbaselitz does not run any agriculture. The surrounding fields of the district are cultivated by the agricultural cooperative Liebenau . A private pond farm is named after the former manor owners Zezschwitz . Wood construction, a forge and a building services business are located in the manufacturing industry and craft technology in Deutschbaselitz. Due to the small number of inhabitants in the district, both trade and gastronomy are not very well developed. The need for food is largely met by the residents of Kamenz. In 1990 the community's only consumption closed. In addition to a small bakery, the gastronomic attraction is the historic country inn and the sports field with its restaurant.

Forestry and fishing

In the former district of Deutschbaselitz, the forest area was given as 180 ha. Mainly pine and deciduous forest. The Sächsisches Forstamt Straßgräbchen is responsible for the supervision . All ponds belonging to the district (sand ponds, holding system Teichwirtschaft, Mühlteich, Hofeteich, Miertscheich, Großteich, Istriche and Grasteich) have a total area of 170.26 hectares. Of this, 123.37 hectares are water. The carp yield is several tons of fish annually. The annual fishing takes place in October.
