history

Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire and Weimar Republic

In 1842 the “ Tydźenska nowina(German weekly news) appeared for the first time in Bautzen , the editors of which were initially Handrij Zejler and later Jan Arnošt Smoler . In 1854 the weekly political journal was renamed from Smoler to Serbske Nowiny. Editing and editing was done by Marko Smoler in the 1870s . The Serbske Nowiny has been published as a daily newspaper since 1921.

From the beginning, the Sorbian newspaper had to deal with disabilities from the state authorities. For example, the City Council of Bautzen expressly stipulated that the Tydźenske nowiny should not distribute any foreign policy news when awarding the concession. In addition, denominational boundaries restricted the distribution of the newspaper. Before 1918 the Serbske Nowiny were mainly read by the Evangelical Sorbs; the newspaper was also printed in the Protestant version of the written Upper Sorbian language.

At the time of the Weimar Republic , the Serbske Nowiny were at the height of their development. Due to the high quality of her articles she was able to win numerous new readers. Now there was also freedom of the press, censorship and the restrictions of the imperial era no longer hindered the development of journalism. The Serbske Nowiny covered a wide range of topics, from politics to culture and entertainment. The paper consistently advocated the political and cultural rights of the Sorbs.

National Socialism

After the National Socialists came to power , the Serbske Nowiny were immediately opposed by the state authorities, and independent political reporting was no longer possible. Jan Cyž was its editor from 1934 until the newspaper was banned in 1937 .

GDR

In the GDR , the newspaper was renamed Nowa doba (Eng. New Epoch; New Time) . It was the only Sorbian daily newspaper in the GDR and appeared for the first time on July 6, 1947. From October 1947, it was published twice a week; from July 1948 three times. With the help and support of the SED , it appeared as a daily newspaper from October 1, 1955. However, it too was subject to the same journalistic restrictions as the rest of the East German press. The majority of the Sorbian newspaper makers nevertheless endeavored to inform the readership as comprehensively and independently as possible about important events in Lusatia and the world. The Sorbian newspaper was particularly useful in the field of cultural and linguistic education.

Current situation

With the new freedom of the press after 1989 reunification, the newspaper took on the old name Serbske Nowiny again, in order to tie in with the democratic traditions of its previous editors ( Handrij Zejler , Jan Arnošt Smoler , Marko Smoler , Jan Skala ) from the period before 1933.

Janek Wowčer has been editor-in-chief since September 2011 ; he succeeded Benedikt Dyrlich , who retired after sixteen years in this role.

A monthly edition in German appears as a supplement.
