Marko Domaš Alexander Smoler ( German Marko Schmaler ; * December 21, 1857 in the Seidau ; † April 11, 1941 in Bautzen ) was a Sorbian publisher and editor, u. a. the Sorbian daily Serbske Nowiny .

Life

He was born as the second son of Jan Arnošt Smoler in the Seidau at the gates of Bautzen and attended the municipal high school. At a young age he wrote stories and translated a. a. from Russian and Czech . In 1875 he was one of the founders of the Sorbian student meeting in Schadźowanka . From 1877 he headed the Schmaler'sche book printing company founded by his father (Smolerjec knihićišćernja) on the Lauengraben . Almost all of the Sorbian newspapers and magazines were published by his publisher. From 1884 until it was banned by the National Socialists in 1937, Smoler was editor and publisher of Serbske Nowiny. Smoler was active in numerous Sorbian associations and in 1920 in Bautzen, together with Jan Skala and Herman Šleca, co-founder of the first Sorbian Sokoł unit.

Marko Smoler was buried in the family grave at the Protschenberg cemetery in Bautzen .
