The NF8U is a low-floor - rail cars of Rheinbahn Dusseldorf based on the vehicle type Combino . It is also the first light rail vehicle in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital to be equipped with low-floor technology. The vehicle has a total of eight pairs of wheels: the two small wheel bogies (KRD) on the vehicle heads are each equipped with two axles and are not motorized, the other four pairs of wheels are individually supported and driven. The railcar was specially designed for the Wehrhahn line .

vehicle

The NF8U is a one-way vehicle which, unlike conventional one-way wagons, has doors on both sides so that the railcar can also stop at central platforms . Like its sister trains NF8 and NF10, it has one hundred percent low-floor entry at a height of 30 cm.

The first 15 vehicles were delivered without air conditioning . Air conditioning was also dispensed with in the following 61 vehicles, as Siemens did not want to guarantee that the permissible axle load of 10 tons would not be exceeded.

The type is also called "Silberpfeil II" or "Hamster cheek".

history

New light rail vehicles were required to put the Wehrhahn Line into operation in 2016. The following basic properties should come into play:

  • Low-floor car
  • Furniture trolley with doors on both sides
  • Car body width no greater than 2.40 meters

Due to the small distance between the tracks on the outer routes of the Wehrhahn Line , the use of high-floor light rail vehicles with a width of 2.65 m is out of the question, especially since the platforms were not increased to 90 cm. However, the decision was made not to use normal bidirectional tram cars, but rather a built-in motor car with doors on both sides so that they can also stop at central platforms. In May 2006 the first wagons of this type came onto the tracks of the Rheinbahn, where they have been in service since April 2007.

In August 2009, Rheinbahn AG ordered a further 26 low-floor light rail vehicles from Siemens and Vossloh Kiepe. This is the last option to redeem the contract for a total of 76 vehicles. The delivery and commissioning of these vehicles was completed in the second quarter of 2012.

In February 2010, delivery of a further 61 vehicles began. In total, this series has now been increased to 76 vehicles by April 2012. On March 26, 2010, the first of the 2nd series was officially presented with car no. 3316. The other wagons are to be delivered to the Rheinbahn in an eight-day delivery cycle. The new NF8U replaced the last GT8S and all "yellow" DUEWAG trains (GT8 + B4) until 2011 . The differences to the first series are the new orange LED displays for line number and destination and the video surveillance of the entire passenger compartment.

Car 3323 is en route on line 703

The first 3 cars (3301-3303) were first used on April 18, 2007 on line 715 in passenger service. Until the Wehrhahn line was commissioned , the railcars were used on above-ground tram lines. Since April 2008 the NF8U has been in service on lines 703 (at times in double traction ), 704, 706, 708, 709, 711, 713 and 715.

After the tram route to Ratingen was converted to the low-floor light rail standard, NF8Us were also used in double traction on line 712 (today U72) since October 27, 2010.

Today the trains run almost exclusively on the lines U71, U72, U73 and U83. The vehicles are used like a bidirectional vehicle by coupling at the end without a driver's cab . In principle, the length of the platform in the tunnel also allows for triple traction, but the platforms on the above-ground access routes are not designed for this. In contrast to the TW 2000/2500 in Hanover and U5 railcars in Frankfurt , no transition between the two vehicles is possible.

delivery

47 cars had been delivered by March 2011. By May 2011 the vehicles followed up to 3350. The remaining cars 3351 to 3376 followed. In April 2012 the last car (3376) of the series was delivered. The Rheinbahn now has a total of 76 cars at its disposal.
