Monika Taubitz (born September 2, 1937 in Breslau , Lower Silesia Province ) is a German poet and writer of prose (novel, story , short story, essay , factual text and radio play ).

Life

Monika Taubitz spent her childhood in the Lower Silesian towns of Markt Bohrau near Strehlen , in the most recently bombed Breslau and in Eisersdorf in the Glatz district .

After the expulsion in 1946, she first lived in Nordenham . In 1951 she moved to the Allgäu . From 1953 to 1958 she attended the advanced high school in Ochsenhausen . Then she started studying in Weingarten / Württemberg. From 1965 she worked as a teacher in Meersburg on Lake Constance , where she still lives today.

She writes poetry and prose and is also an editor. Since 1996 Monika Taubitz has headed the Wangener Kreis - Society for Literature and Art “The East”, and in 2011 she was elected honorary chairman. Many of her works have also been translated into Polish, including a selection of poems A country gave me its word. Poems about Silesia / Ten kraj dał mi słowo swoje. Wiersze o Śląsku (bilingual edition Wrocław / Dresden 2006, 2nd extended edition Wrocław / Dresden 2007). The poems were written over the course of several years and have appeared in volumes of poetry.

Awards and honors

In 1978 she received the Eichendorff Literature Prize . In 2012 she also received the Andreas Gryphius Prize . For her many years of voluntary work for her Silesian homeland and her adopted home in Baden-Württemberg, the poet was also awarded the Baden-Württemberg Home Medal . With her work, she has always advocated understanding between Germans and Eastern Europeans. In January 2014 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her contribution to international understanding. In November 2016 Monika Taubitz was awarded the Nikolaus Lenau Prize for her volume of 2013 poetry, Flußleben . On February 22, 2018, Monika Taubitz became the first honorary citizen of the city of Meersburg.
