Carl Guesmer (born May 14, 1929 in Kirch Grambow ; † March 4, 2009 in Schöningen ; actually: Karl Achim Waldemar Güsmer ) was a German poet and librarian.

Life

Carl Guesmer was born in Kirch Grambow in Mecklenburg and grew up in the Parchim rectory . In 1951 he went to West Germany and became a librarian in Marburg / Lahn.

In 1959 he published poems for the first time in Alfred Döblin's magazine Das Goldene Tor . His first two volumes of poetry appeared in the hermit press in 1954 and 1955. After retiring in 1994, he moved to Schöningen , choosing the geographical center between Marburg and Kirch Grambow. Here he committed suicide on March 4, 2009.

Guesmer was discovered and promoted by Alfred Döblin in 1948: “Your two poems arrived here. Thank you and we will be happy to reprint it soon. ”(Döblin to Guesmer, November 30, 1948). He made a name for himself as a natural poet, but also with lyrical prose sketches and essays. His volume Geschehen und Landschaft contains memories of his childhood in Mecklenburg.

In 1962, Guesmer received the Lessing Prize from the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and in 1976 the Andreas Gryphius Prize from the City of Düsseldorf.
