Olly Komenda-Soentgerath , actually Olly Komendová-Soentgerathová (born October 23, 1923 in Prague , † June 8, 2003 in Cologne ) was a German writer .

Life

Olly Komenda-Soentgerath comes from a German family in Prague . She began a study of German language and literature and history at Prague's Charles University and published her first works in the Prager Tagblatt . In 1946 she was from Czechoslovakia expelled and arrived after the Second World War in a cattle car to Cologne , where they lived for the 1947th

She was first and foremost a poet . She was best known as the translator of the Czech Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Seifert , whose translations had been published two years before receiving the Nobel Prize. In his afterword in the Czech edition of the volume of poetry That sleeps me under the eyelids at night , Seifert Komenda-Soentgerath described: With her deeply feminine inspiration. Your sensitivity that never loses its head. Its intense intensity combined with the purity of form. The critic Hans-Jürgen Heise wrote about her in Die Zeit : The poet who tries to travel through life “on the stepping stone of the wind” is at the same time outdated and contemporary.

Three of her books have been published in English in London and Boston and a selection volume in German-Arabic edition in Beirut , Lebanon. Her poems have been published in anthologies, newspapers and magazines, and have been broadcast on radio and television. There are settings and translations in several languages.

Komenda-Soentgerath was a member of the German PEN Center , the Association of German Writers , the Esslingen Artists' Guild and GEDOK . In 1988 she was awarded the GEDOK Prize. In 1992 she received the Bavarian Culture Prize for Literature and in 1996 the Andreas Gryphius Prize .

Komenda-Soentgerath appeared in public for the last time in September 2001 at the Lew Kopelew Forum in Cologne, where she recited Seifert's verses on the occasion of the 100th birthday.
