Vidar Johansen (born June 2, 1953 ) is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist, flutist and bass clarinetist.

Life

Johansen began his career as a jazz musician in the early 1970s in a quartet with Jon Eberson . He was a member of Jon Balke's quartet from 1974 to 1975 and then led his own quartet with Erik Balke , with which he participated in the Molde Festival (1975) and the Vossajazz Festival (1976). He was also a member of the jazz rock group Adonis .

From 1977 to 1983 he was a member of the jazz rock group Lotus . He played in Espen Rud's group Kråbøl in 1978 , led a quartet with Åsmund Snortheim in 1978/79 and worked with the bands of Åge Røthe , Per Høglend and Anne-Marie Giørtz . From 1979 to 1989 he played in Lille Frøen Saksofonkvartett , with which he took part in several festivals and recorded the LP 4 menn .

Johansen founded a trio with Kåre Garnes and Tom Olstad in 1990, and from 1991 he worked on several albums by the Søyr group . He gained experience as a big band musician with the Jacob Hansen / Harald Gundhus Storband , the Radiostordandet with whom he worked from 1978 to 1990, the Per Husby Dedication Orchestra , the The Gambian / Norwegian Friendship Orchestra , the Jens Wendelboe Big Band , the Lars Martin Myhre / Slagen Storband and the Kjell Karlsen Big Band .

In 1995 he recorded his first own album, Lopsided - Live at Oslo Jazzhus , with his trio . With Bjørnar Andresen and Thomas Strønen he founded the group Bayashi , which released the albums Help Is on Its Way (2001) and Rock (2004). He also worked on albums by Tine Asmundsen , Jacob Young , Eric Wesselthoft ( Con Amor ) and Sonny Simmons . In 2004 he recorded the album Life Is a Beautiful Monster with the Crimetime Orchestra .
