Clement Dowd

Clement Dowd (born August 27, 1832 in Richland Creek , Moore County , North Carolina , †  April 15, 1898 in Charlotte , North Carolina) was an American politician .

Dowd studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , graduating in 1856. In 1857 and 1858 he worked as a teacher. In 1859 he was admitted to the bar and practiced in Charlotte. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army . After the war he returned to his previous job. From 1869 to 1871 Dowd held the office of Mayor of Charlotte. He then became President of the Merchants & Farmers' National Bank from 1871 to 1874 and President of the Commercial National Bank of Charlotte from 1874 to 1880 .

Dowd was elected as a Democrat in Congress and represented there from March 4, 1881 to March 3, 1885, the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives . In the elections of 1884 he no longer ran. He died in Charlotte in 1898 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery .
