John Howard Coble (born March 18, 1931 in Greensboro , North Carolina , † November 3, 2015 there ) was an American politician . From 1985 to 2015 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Howard Coble attended Appalachian State University in Boone after high school until 1950 . He then served between 1952 and 1956 in the US Coast Guard , whose reserve he was a member between 1960 and 1982. In 1977 and 1978 it was temporarily reactivated. Until 1958 Coble studied at Guilford College in Greensboro. After studying law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and being admitted to the bar in 1966, he began working in his new profession.

Politically, Coble joined the Republican Party . In 1969 and between 1979 and 1983 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . From 1969 to 1973 he served as assistant federal attorney for the central district of North Carolina; from 1973 to 1977 he was Secretary of the Department of Revenue .

In the congressional elections of 1984, Coble was in the sixth constituency of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the on January 3, 1985 Democrats Charles Robin Britt took, whom he had defeated in the election. After 14 re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2015. In 2014 he decided not to run again. Coble was a member of the Justice Committee and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, as well as a total of five sub-committees. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Iraq war and the war in Afghanistan occurred during his time as a member of Congress . Coble stood up for the interests of agriculture. Within his party he belonged to the Tea Party Caucus , the faction that is close to the Tea Party movement .

Howard Coble was unmarried. He was one of the 30 longest-serving congressmen when he left Congress.
