Stephen Lybrook Neal (born November 7, 1934 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ) is a former American politician . Between 1975 and 1995 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stephen Neal attended the common schools and then the Narbonne High School in Lomita ( California ). He then studied at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the University of Hawaii in Manoa . After completing his studies, Neal worked in banking and publishing.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1974 he was a delegate to the extraordinary Democratic National Convention . In the congressional election of that year , Neal was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Republican Wilmer Mizell , whom he had previously defeated, on January 3, 1975 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 .

In 1994 Stephen Neal renounced another congressional candidacy. He has not appeared politically since then.
