Robert Cannon "Robin" Hayes (born August 14, 1945 in Concord , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2009 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robin Hayes studied at Duke University in Durham until 1967 . He then began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1978 he was elected to Concord City Council; between 1992 and 1996 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . In 1996 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections .

In the 1998 congressional elections , Hayes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Bill Hefner on January 3, 1999 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place during this period . Hayes was a member of the Agriculture Committee, the Armed Forces Committee, the Transport and Infrastructure Committee and a total of eight sub-committees.

In the 2008 election, Hayes was defeated by Democrat Larry Kissell . Since January 15, 2011, he has succeeded Tom Fetzer as chairman of the Republican Party in North Carolina. Hayes is married and lives in Concord. He also owns a hosiery factory in Mount Pleasant .
