Eliza Jane Pratt

Eliza Jane Pratt (born March 5, 1902 in Morven , Anson County , North Carolina , †  May 13, 1981 in Charlotte , North Carolina) was an American politician . In 1946 and 1947 she represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Eliza Pratt attended the public schools in her home country and Queens College in Charlotte. In 1923 and 1924 she worked as a newspaper editor in Troy . From 1924 she was secretary to Congressmen Robert L. Doughton , Walter Lambeth and William O. Burgin , all of whom represented the eighth constituency of the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives.

After the death of William Burgin, Eliza Pratt was elected as the Democratic Party candidate in the due by-election for the eighth seat of North Carolina as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on May 25, 1946 . Since she refused to run again in the regular congressional elections of 1946 , she was only able to end the current legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1947 .

Between 1947 and 1951 Pratt worked for the Office of Alien Property . She then worked for the US Department of Agriculture until 1954 . From 1954 to 1956 she was employed by the Library of Congress ; then she worked between 1957 and 1962 for Congressman Alvin Paul Kitchin . She then headed the public relations department at the North Carolina Telephone Company . At the time, Eliza Pratt lived in Wadesboro . She died in Charlotte on May 13, 1981.
