Walter Beaman Jones Sr. (born August 19, 1913 in Fayetteville , North Carolina , †  September 15, 1992 in Norfolk , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1966 and 1992 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Jones first attended the Elise Academy in Hemp and then studied until 1934 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh . Then he worked as a private businessman. Politically, Jones became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1949 and 1953 he was mayor of the city of Farmville ; from 1955 to 1959 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In 1965 he was a member of the State Senate .

After the death of MP Herbert Covington Bonner , Jones was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the first seat of North Carolina , where he took up his new mandate on February 5, 1966. After 13 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death in September 1992 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the end of the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair took place . The 25th and 26th amendments to the Constitution were also ratified. Since 1981, Jones was chairman of the committee that dealt with the merchant marine and fisheries.

Walter Jones died in Norfolk on September 15, 1992. His son Walter , born in 1943, has represented the Third District of North Carolina in Congress since 1995.
